Sam Erwin

	Memorial services for Sam Erwin, 67, of Champaign, were at 3 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church of Champaign.  The Rev. Mal Nygren officiated.
	Private burial was in Roselawn Cemetery, Champaign.
	Visitation was from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Renner-Wikoff Funeral Chapel, 1900 S. Philo Road in Urbana.
	Mr. Erwin died at 3:48 p.m. Tuesday, November 12, 2002 at home.
	He was born June 3, 1935 in Desha, Ark., a son of William Shafer and Elizabeth Rosalie Pelley Erwin.  He married Maryln Reutter on June 16, 1957 in DuQuoin.  She survives.
	Also surviving are a son, Sam Erwin of Batavia; two daughters, Sandra Kay Erwin of Mobile, Ala. and Susan Elizabeth Siambancs of Batavia; six grandchildren and a brother, William Erwin of Scottsdale, Ariz.
	Mr. Erwin graduated from the University of Illinois in 1957, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi social fraternity.  He served in the Navy as an officer on Chi Chi Jima, Bonin Islands, for three years.  He then returned to the University of Illinois and graduated from the School of Law in 1963.
	After spending four years in the Chicago area as an attorney for Amoco Oil Company and Carson Pirie Scott, he returned to Champaign and opened his own law practice, concentrating in estate planning, real estate and business matters, and as well known for his activity in the corporate field.  His primary interest was in forming new business entities.  He was one of the first attorneys in central Illinois to prepare private offerings for the purpose of raising equity funds for small businesses.
	Mr. Erwin was also active in community affairs.  He served six years on the Champaign City Council and was president of the Community Foundation of Champaign County.  He was active in Republican politics and served as president of Young Republicans of Champaign County.  He was active at First Presbyterian Church, where he  served as a member of the board of trustees for two terms.
